Chapter 2: Trico or Jayman???
The decision to move to Riviera Riversong Cochrane was made around January 2017 then the next step was to choose the Builder! With a couple lots I was considering, there were two builders in the area. It's either Trico or Jayman. I am a little more familiar with Trico since they are one of the builders in Heritage Hills where I thought I was going to land at the beginning of the process.
Trico vs Jayman (my experience/my opinion)
- Choices of home designs: I think both have really good number of choices on home designs with different floor plans and sizes depending on what you are looking for. Think about the size and floor plan to help narrow down which design would be the right home for you. I looked at 4 different designs from Trico ranging from 2000 to 2500 sq ft and a couple designs from Jayman. I like the minimalist concept and was looking for something between 2000 to 2200 sq ft. with a certain layout for upstairs. (I will tell you more later)
- Flexibility: I find that Trico is more flexible than Jayman when it comes to modifying the design to suit what you are looking for and Trico sales rep impressed me that she handled this part so well and understood the process, the design, the building code very well. Trico was willing to box in the furnace without developing the whole basement with them vs Jayman would only do that if I develop the basement with them. Trico was very accommodating when going through customization of your home e.g. moving certain structural wall, extending the width of the deck further from the outside of your home, tile showers. Jayman will not do tile base showers due to water liability issues.
- Standard Home Spec: Both Jayman and Trico have "half decent" (not sure what is the right word to use) standard package that comes with the home without doing any upgrades. This is very subjective since everyone's standard is not the same. For me, I end up with a number of upgrades and this is to do with personal taste and regardless of which builder I choose. (I will tell you more about my upgrades later)
- Interior Choices: It became very obvious to me when I visited Jayman Style Magic Center (Deerfoot SW Calgary) that Jayman has a lot more options than Trico when it comes to Interior design. Trico also has a design Center with lots of options but it was not at the same scale to Jayman when it comes to selections. For example Trico may have something like 5 faucets for you to choose but Jayman would have 10. Trico do give you options but Jayman has more. I love Jayman Style Magic Center. So far I spent a couple of short drop-in visits to check out material selections like flooring, cabinets, counter tops, etc.
- Building Quality: Based on all the Showhomes I visited, I have to say both are good quality builders. I cannot comment from my personal experience yet but for sure it will be one of my chapters once the building journey starts.
There are more aspects to compare like pricing, rating, etc. And I will share with you how I made my choice. I will continue in the next chaper as part two. I had a long day and need to hit the sack shortly here.
