Chapter 2.1: Trico or Jayman??? (Cont.)

Continue on from Chaper 2 ... in this chapter I'm going to give you few more aspects I considered during the decision making process.

Social Review: Another common thing people do these days when the information is at the tip of your finger is to google about the company they are interested in... so did I. I googled the reviews on Trico and Jayman on the internet and the first thing that popped up was reviews by HomeStars. I was blown away by the good reviews Trico had. They scored 9 out of 10 with a little over 330 reviews (that is a lot!). This is no joke to me. It's not easy to get such a consistent good review from 300+ customer reviews. They got fantastic reviews all the way from the sales office, during the building process to warranty after possession. They seem to be very responsive to the issues home owners had after taking possession. The latter part was one of my concerns in the home building journey. After reading the reviews Trico received, I felt confident that I will be in a good hand throughout the process and also had a peace of mind that Trico will take care of me if there is any issue after possession date "on a timely basis". On the other hand, Jayman had such a poor review on HomeStars. They scored 5.7 out of 10 with a little less than 100 reviews. This is like 1 of every 2 reviews was bad. I went through all the reviews. I almost departed from Jayman for this reason. The reviews scared me since I know that the struggles are real from these customers and I do not want to have or share the same experience they had with Jayman. The only reason why I closed one eye on the impact from these reviews is that most of the bad reviews are from Edmonton and if I filtered the reviews to just Cochrane, it's not bad. In fact, they have good reviews in Sunset area. To be honest with you, with the negative reviews I read I'm still a bit nervous on Jayman customer service and their warranty after possession date. I hope Jayman will prove my fear wrong... fingers crossed for the next 8 months. I weighed in online customer reviews a lot in my decision making process.

Pricing: I got 2 quotes one from Trico and one from Jayman for a similar house in size with approximately a little over 2000 sq ft. (Less than 2100 sq ft). The lot is almost next to each other therefore very comparable for the land price. I am a Finance person by trade so numbers is my cup of tea. I have to say that the bottom line was competitive. My Trico quote was based on Elite Plus package and Jayman was a Plus package. The real differences are things that are included in the house and how you value each difference to your person taste i.e. what matters to you more (is it the 10mm glass or is it the colour of your quartz counter top?, etc.) For example: Trico' s price included 10 mm glass shower, granite/quartz for all bathroom counter tops versus Jayman these are upgrades but then Jayman included good lighting design (lamps, pendants, pots), good brand toilet, great selections of hardwood, tiles, granites/quartz versus these would be upgrades with Trico. The pricing strategy of the two builders are different. I went line by line for things like walkout basement development, deck, railing, etc. There are puts and takes which at the end drove the bottom line to come in close to each other. If I were to take my personal taste out of the equation, I would say that you get a better bang for your buck with Trico if you for Trico basic house.

Next Chapter, I will talk about how I made my decision and what are on my watchlist with Jayman and why.

If you want me to write more comparisons in other aspects, leave me a comment and I will get back to you.
